Glass For
Commercial
Buildings

Commercial building owners saw the benefits of using glass as a building material as early as 1850 when the Crystal Palace, a 992,000-square-foot building, was built with 300,000 pieces of glass. Since then, aesthetics haven't been the only thing that motivates architects to use glass to construct buildings. Glass walls can help increase the natural light and open views, bringing outdoor spaces to interiors. High-efficiency performing glass can help enhance the carbon footprint.

Commercial businesses of all types in Colorado know that Horizon Glass is the leading commercial glass company for installing quality commercial glass in new constructions, as well as all commercial service needs and restorations. Depending on the building specifications, the type of glass we install for your project may differ depending on your requirements. Learn about the different kinds of commercial glass and how they can fit into your building plans.

Types of Commercial Glass

Float Glass

Float glass is usually used in today’s windows. It is the process of creating a uniform-thickness sheet of glass by “floating” a layer of molten glass on a bed of metal, a process pioneered in the 1950s. Before this, flat glass was widely formed using rollers and then polished, which was both a lengthy process and expensive.

The advantages of float glass are its uniform thickness, durability, clarity, and versatility for many building applications. However, float glass can't withstand extreme temperature differences unless accompanied by special performance coatings and an insulating process.

Safety Glass

Tempered Glass is the most common “safety glass” used in modern glazing. Tempered glass is made using float glass, which adds to the manufacturing process. The float glass is thoroughly cleaned, then superheated, and finally quenched using cold air. This process “tempers” the glass much like metal. It increases the surface strength of the glass and, if broken, will break into smaller rounded chunks rather than sharp shards. Car windows, door glass, glass tables, and other applications with higher safety standards are made from tempered glass.

Laminated glass is another popular “Safety Glass” type. It introduces a plastic interlayer between two or more sheets of glass. The layer can help keep the overall glass intact and in place even after breakage. The glass used is often tempered as well, adding to its overall strength and safety.

The manufacturing process of laminated glass makes its strength almost impossible to break. Because of this trait, the glass is used in applications such as:

  • Buildings at risk for damage caused by hurricanes or natural disasters
  • Windows for buildings that require a higher security level
  • Display cabinets for valuables
  • Skylights
  • Glass roofs, floors, or stairs
  • Animal enclosures or aquariums

Factors to Consider When Choosing Commercial Glass:

Architectural requirements | Energy efficiency | Safety and security features | Maintenance and durability | Aesthetics and design options
